The siege of Nollendorfplatz is over. At last the route to Kreuzberg, Treptow and Friedrichshain has been reopened by the sterling work of those U-Bahn diggers. Tonight I travelled all the way from Warschauer Strasse to Nollendorfplatz in the U1 without changing to the U2. Click the headline for full story.
They said it would reopen before Christmas and it has now - only three months late. The U1 has been shut since November between Gleisdrieck and Wittenbergplatz (click the pic for a larger view). You could almost believe that it was a deliberate plan to trap gay Berliners in their ghetto. This evening I went out on U4/U7, had dinner in Kreuzberg and then went on the U7/U8/U1 to get to Warschauer Str. The U1 was definitely closed in Nollendorfplatz at 7pm. They had signs up saying it would reopen on Decenber 18th and they had been stickered over saying that they would be "ready when they were ready". By 11pm all the signs were removed and trains were operating normally, as if nothing had happened. On my way home to Nollendorfplatz from Warschauer Str, I got out of the train at Gleisdreieck. Then the train blandly proceeded West as if it had been doing that every day. There was no announcement to celebrate the grand reopening and I had to wait ten minutes on a freezing platform for the next train. Thank you BVG.

STOP PRESS: U1 still open 17:15 10 March 2010.

Oh my god I fell off my chair reading this. Unbelievable. Are you sure they are not just making fun of us innocent U-Bahn drivers? Maybe tomorrow it will all be back to normal, changing at Gleisdreieck and taking the U2. Huuuhhh.............
