It's official, things are getting worse in Russia. A new report by the UN Human Rights Committee highlights abuses in Russia and calls on the Kremlin to bring in a number of reforms. The panel said it was concerned about violence against LGBT Russians and police harassment. It said that people have been assaulted or even killed because they were gay or lesbian and that there was "systematic discrimination against individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation".
Homosexuality was decriminalised in Russia in the 1990s. Yuri Luzhkov, the mayor of Moscow, is an outspoken foe of gay rights and has always blocked attempts to hold gay pride marches in the capital, calling one a satanic gathering.
