Three visitors to Berlin were last night turned away from the 'famous' Toms Bar in Motzstrasse. The three men from the UK had gone to Toms on a recommendation from locals that , on a quiet Monday night in town, Tom's 2-for-1 night might be a lively party for their first night in Berlin.
As they entered the open bar a member of staff emerged from the cloakroom and said "not for you", escorting them back out the door. On asking why. They were told it was a 'Leather Night'. When one of them returned to enquire further as to why they were not allowed entry, he was then told by another member of staff that it was 'Locals Only'.
It is encouraging to see that in this economic climate, Toms is doing so well that it can afford to turn away three affluent older gay men looking for a night out on their trip to Berlin. But, if Toms now has an upper age limit for entry, maybe they should just be honest and say so!

We celebrate Christopher Street Day, to what effect? Pathetic! It is really bad what is in the head of those staff members at Tom's bar, or at the other bars where they discriminate. Not so long ago, gay men were discriminated against (in some places they still are) and are the target of homophobic gay bashers...which we had read in the German press...

I am currently in Berlin and witnessed some obvious discrimination at Tom’s Bar tonight. It seems the bar staff turns away everyone who is either to big (fat), to “ethnic”, or too old. I spent about an hour in the bar, sitting next to the door, and saw the doorman refusing people entry for no reason. At one point, a man was told in broken English that he was too fat to enter. I was shocked. The bar itself was nearly empty and I left because I was bored and felt uncomfortable about the discrimination I witnessed. Back in my hotel, I googled and found this page.

I had the same experience yesterday, not allowed to enter, the doorman said: "this is a private bar", quite likely because I´m 50+. Seems to depend on the staff in charge, the day before there was not a problem.
Does anyone know if age discrimination in bars is legal in Germany?
Will join Malcolm and Jason in the boycott!

Tom's bar is easily the nastiest place for a drink in Berlin for visitors unless you are from Eastern European States hustling then you are very welcome it seems to me and I am a foreigner who lives here and knows these streets very well.

Please make a note:
We are visiting from San Francisco and a friend suggested Tom’s Bar. We visited and were told we were not welcome because of age. In San Francisco this would result in a prison for any business owner with such discrimination. Should Berlin allow such illegal actions? NO. We will be sure to inform all of San Francisco that Berlin is not a friendly place to visit. We are sorry but intolerance is not acceptable anywhere in the world and we did not expect it in Germany of all places. If necessary we will be willing to testify in court as to the actions of Tom’s. We were let in however when inside, the boss would not serve me and told me I should have not been let in.
