Well, it looks like since Iraq was "liberated" it's a living hell for the gay people living there. Over 130 have been kidnapped and tortured by extreme Islamist militias this year alone. Nothing we haven't reported here before but it's getting worse and now the militia's are infiltrating gay chat rooms to actively find their victims. To quote an article in today's Guardian 'Militia groups whose raison d'être was security in their communities are seeing that function now fulfilled by the police. So their focus has shifted to the moral and cultural sphere, reverting to classic Islamist tactics of policing moral boundaries. The killings are brutal, with victims ritually tortured. Azhar al-Saeed's son was one. "We found his body with signs of torture, his anus filled with glue and without his genitals," she said. "I will carry this image with me until my dying day."'
It's a tragedy as the LGBT community wasn't persecuted under Saddam. We created the circumstances for this to happen. Sadly, it looks like it's only going to get worse as the authorities either don't care or are complicit. Not quite what we wanted to achieve by liberating them is it?
