berlin It's all happening in South America: Just before the weekend lawmakers in Uruguay approved a bill to legalise gay adoption. It's not finished yet, but it should become law later this year. In the same week the Argentinean supreme court ruled that it was unconstitutional to punish anybody for possession of small quantities of cannabis. The week before Mexico passed a law that decriminalized possession of small quantities of most drugs, including marijuana, heroin, cocaine and LSD. Then earlier in the year a Brazilian appeals court ruled that possession of drugs for personal use is not illegal. Meanwhile in Britain, GBL has joined GHB on the list of class C banned drugs and mephedrone and methylone seem to be becoming more popular. They're legal and easily available on the web, often masquerading as plant food. Experts say that the acute effects are pretty much indistinguishable from MDMA and amphetamines. Mephedrone appears to have some compulsive effects. One user said "I did eight grams of meph over the weekend. My heart is still beating strangely and my mouth has all the skin peeled off on the inside." Oops - 'normal' dose is one fifth of a gram.
