2am one July morning 170 police raided Maria and searched clubbers and staff for drugs. Happy dancers were told to sit on the floor. "They knocked glasses out of some guests hands and shouted at us that we sould sit on the floor". Some, who didn't understand what to do, were treated roughly. "most of the police did not speak English."
It turned out that Maria was not the drug den htat the police expected. Of 123 people searched in the 4 hour operation only 12 had any drugs on them. A member of staff said "We were threatened and treated as criminals".
